WHAT?

The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution operates a number of retirement and nursing homes throughout England and Wales. Scarbrough Court, named after a former Grand Master, the Earl of Scarbrough, serves predominantly, but not exclusively, the Provinces of Durham, Northumberland and Cumberland & Westmorland.

WHERE?

Scarbrough Court is located in its own grounds on the outskirts of Cramlington, Northumberland and is conveniently situated for access to Newcastle, the countryside and the coast.

WHO?

Who is entitled to an annuity towards a residency at Scarbrough Court?
Freemasons and their female dependants qualify. These are defined as:
Brethren who have subscribed, or are subscribing to Lodges in the English Constitution
Widows of Freemasons
Unmarried sisters and daughters of Freemasons
Dependant mothers or mothers-in-law of Freemasons
Dependant incapacitated children of Freemasons

A Brother is eligible to apply for admission when he has attained the age of 60 and has paid subscriptions for at least 10 years to a Lodge or Lodges in the English Constitution. Married couples are eligible when the younger of them has attained the age of 60 (provided they have been married for 5 years and that the male otherwise qualifies)

If in doubt about eligibility, please ask.

HOW?

The Lodge Almoner is the first point of contact with RMBI facilities, including Scarbrough Court.
An RMBI Welfare Worker is also available for personal advice and help.

FACILITIES

Scarbrough Court offers a complete range of care, including a full nursing service as well as straight-forward sheltered accommodation. There are spacious, self-contained unfurnished bungalows in the grounds. They comprise one bedroom, lounge, fitted kitchen and bathroom. Residents may bring their own furniture, carpets and curtains. Heating, lighting and water are included in the weekly rent. However Council Tax must still be paid. Residents can enjoy the covered walkway and enjoy the leisure facilities such as a bowling green, television rooms and library. The home is welcoming and friendly and has a high level of staffing to provide for individual needs.

THE FRIENDS

Whilst the RMBI funds the operation of the home, the Association of Friends endeavours to provide those extra facilities which make life more comfortable and enjoyable and which are beyond the scope of the RMBI budget. Regular fund raising projects and events help to finance these (see 'EVENTS' below):

Recently, the Friends, through the contributions of Brethren in Northumberland, Durham and Cumberland & Westmorland have provided:

Pressure-relieving mattresses and adjustable beds in every room in the Nursing Unit
Pressure-relieving mattresses for the more frail residents in the Residential Unit
A Fiat Doblo vehicle with access with wheelchair access more appropriate to the less mobile residents
Adapted chairs in the Nursing Unit.

The Friends also keep the Brethren of the three Provinces informed about developments at the home by newsletters and Liaison Officers appointed in every Masonic Hall. Please look out for and read the excellent "Scarbrough Court News".

LATEST !

GOOD NEWS ! Scarbrough Court is not moving!.

IT IS TO BE EXTENDED !

After a long search by the the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution to find a new site it has been decided to build adjacent to the present site in order to provide residents with modern accomodation, purpose-built to meet their needs.

Planning permission should soon be completed and building commenced in the near future.

Scarbrough Court was originally built in 1967 and was in need of major refurbishment.

When completed the new Nursing Home will be one of the finest homes run by the RMBI.

Funds are still needed and, most important, so are 'Friends'.

Any developments will be notified on the 'News and Events' page of this web-site.
